Well, we have finally settled into a blue sky summer weather pattern. We came through a few bad weeks of torrential rain, high winds, hail and devastating tornadoes. The cleanup is ongoing and the response from people from the USA and the world has been amazing.

Today I'm posting an American icon: the classic red barn. I've done several paintings of classic red barns and will probably do more. I have posted a 6" x 6" version on Daily Paintworks. If you are interested please go to Daily Paintworks and take a look.

My first peony opened yesterday...a beautiful coral color. My purplse irises are in full bloom and I've been busy planting red geraniums. On May 11, Norman is having its second Open Studio Tour and I've decided to participate this year. I'm a little nervous about the tour because my studio is small and not very impressive. This time of years brings lots of art events: the Arts Festival in OKC (one of the best in the country), the National Juried Watermedia Exhibit (I'm happy to have a painting included in this show), the National Weathe Station International Juried Show here in Norman, the Open Studio Tour, the Mayfaire....etc. My show at the Governor's Gallery came down last week; I have boxes of paintings in my office yet unpacked. I will probably show some of them at the Tour in addition to the smaller paintings. My latest post on DailyPaintworks is "Garden Tools." If you are interested in purchasing, please visit DailyPaintworks.
The colors are bright and clear; in fact, these photos don't do them justice. I would like to see them go to a good home, so I'm offering them at a special price. If you are interested, please click on my DailyPaintworks Gallery link and email me.
The color in this painting reflects that preview. Although our grass isn't a carpet of green yet, there are little patches of green popping up here and there. Also, the golden jonquils outside my bedroom window are show stoppers...as is this little barn. You can purchase the painting tomorrow on DailyPaintworks.
I think a pink utility shed is a great idea and you really notice it as you drive by. Maybe utility shed manufacturers should consider some luscious new colors instead of the usual reds, browns, tans, and greens etc. This painting is for sale on Daily Paintworks.
My work is currently being shown in the Governor's Gallery in the Oklahoma State Capitol building. It will be there until April 21. This is one of the proudest moments of my art career. If you want to read about it and get a preview of the work in the exhibit, go to http://www.arts.ok.gov/. In the Art at the Capitol drop menu, click Exhibitions, click Governor's Gallery.

The old farmhouse just visible above the summer grasses sits under a midsummer hazy sky, while the second painting is of a vintage house in town that reflects the architecture of the 20s and 30s. My friend calls it the refrigerator house because it reminds her of the old fridges with rounded corners and chrome. My mother had a Frigidaire. Those old fridges had a lot of character and I think this house does too. It was on a low rise and almost obscrued by weeds and brush. In the painting I opened it up a bit so that more of the hosue is visible; then I painted it lavendar, which I think suits the house.

We have had a beautiful spring this year. It hasn't been overly hot (in the 100s last year) and my garden is healthy and in bloom. I'm not a flower painter; I usually take a lot of photographs of my flowers--but I'm tempted to paint some portratis of my lillies--they are breathtaking.
I shared an open house with an artist friend of mine that was given by the Norma Arts Council. We had good attendance and received good feedback. The artists who participated also had two pieces in a special exhibit the weekend of the open house. I am pleased to say that both of my pieces sold. It always makes me happy when someone enjoys my work enough to want it in their home or collection. Right now, my husband is building panels for me in preparation for a very exciting solo exhibit in early 2013 (more on that later). I have to prep them and get them ready for paint BUT all of those pristine, empty panels scare me. I always have the pre-jitters of what if I ruin this panel--what if the painting is a failure, and so on. Once, I get in the "painting-groove" I'm okay and if probelms come up, I solve them.

Here are two little 4" x 4" barns that I painted during the open house. If you are interested in purchasing them, please click on DailyPaintworks.
Some of these wonderful old structures have been converted to churches or other uses, but most of them are abandoned and left to rot. Sometimes, someone will convert one into a family home, which I think is a great idea. I did find one that had been converted to a community center and another one in the northern part of the state that is part of a reconstructed prairie town, along with a church and railway station. This schoolhouse sits abandoned near a very busy interstate and is surrounded by industrial growth. It's a very impressive structure, larger than most I've seen, and I think its lines are beautiful. Of course, it is pretty much boarded up, but I decided to remove a few boards and paint it as it might have looked long ago (maybe a little more colorful). I will probably paint it several times from different angles, as I think its future is doubtful. Click Daily Paintworks for purchasing information.
As I said in my previous post, I'm amazed by the different shapes and sizes of chicken coops. This fancy little coop is on a farm east of town. It's not being using to house chickens any more, but I think the chickens who lived there were in a little higher tax bracket than others. This is why I named it "Condo Coop." I found this little coop between an old house and barn on one of my day trips. I have painted several coops; I guess they remind me of the chickens in the coop on my grandma and grandpa's farm. I used to help my grandmother gather fresh eggs when I visited. As a result, we always had a huge, tasty breakfast complete with homemade biscuits and jelly. Yummm. It is located in the northwest part of the state near the Kansas border. It was a beautiful clear day: brilliant blue sky and fresh green open pastures. The young soy carpeted the fields for miles and miles with its bright yellow blooms. My kind of day! When we do day trips I'm always on the lookout for interesting structures, especially old barns and abandoned houses. I spotted several on this glorius day and the little 4" x 4" paintings I posted yesterday and today are two of my discoveries. There's a Native American legend that says that our town proper will never be hit by a tornado. The tornado will always follow the river that runs south of town. Well, this has been true until Friday when a small tornado touched down in town and traveled across the central section doing a fair amount of damage. I was in the closet with my dogs, while my husband was sitting in his truck in the parking lot of the high school waiting to pick up our grandson. I was talking to him on the cell phone because my tv reception was down; I knew there was a tornado in the area and of course I was nervous. All of a sudden my husband said that the truck was beginning to rock violently; then his phone went dead. A few minutes later, the wind and rain began at our house. When I got him on the line again, he was okay. Later, we found out that the tornado went over him and the high school and touched down in the neighborhood just behind him. I don't think he ever wants to be up front and personal relationship with a tornado again. There was a lot of physical damage, but thank goodness, no lives were lost.
We had a 4.6 aftershock Sunday night--which I didn't feel eventhough everyone else did! Today, it's a beautiful fall day: crisp air, blue skies and golden leaves that are falling to the ground.

I'm posting another prairie barn today. As I drive through the countryside I take photos of these old barns that pop up on the horizon. They are primarily used to store hay or other materials. Many of them are disappearing and being replaced by metal structures. The painting can be purchased on my Daily Paintwords link.
The earth shook last night in Oklahoma. We were about 30 miles from the epicenter of a 5.6 earthquake. I know this doesn't sound bad compared to the strong earthquakes that hit other parts of the world, but for us it was the strongest quake to ever hit the state, and it was a very scary feeling. We didn't have any damage other than a few items that toppled over in the house. This is the third quake that has rattled our area this year.
